Sustainable Packaging
Innovative Eco-friendly Packaging Solutions

The global movement towards sustainable practices is gaining momentum. More organisations in South Africa have acknowledged their role in the environmental crisis. They are now taking steps to reduce their impact on the planet. Many businesses have already discontinued using plastic packaging throughout their supply chain. The government’s policies about sustainable practices played a huge role in this shift. The consumers’ demand for greener options was also an effective driving force.
The shift to eco-packaging in South Africa is on the rise. To stay on top of this, we push the limits of our packaging and manufacturing capabilities. At Foster International Packaging, our innovation efforts focus on sustainable packaging. We are one of the packaging suppliers in South Africa who aim to move away from single-use plastic. Instead, our company offers more earth-friendly, high-quality packaging options. These solutions use fewer raw materials and produce less waste and carbon dioxide.
Recyclable Packaging
Reduce your company’s carbon footprint! Join the movement toward a more earth-friendly option.
Through innovation, Foster International Packaging creates pouches and bags using sustainable packaging materials. Made of a mono-polymer substrate, these eco-friendly packaging options are easily recyclable. And once processed, they can be used again as raw material for making new packaging or other products. Businesses can reduce their environmental impact by choosing reusable packaging. This decision can lead to a significant reduction in their environmental footprint.

FAQs on Sustainable Packaging:
What does sustainable packaging mean?
Sustainable packaging refers to alternatives to single-use plastic. By using the alternatives, we limit the packaging industry’s environmental impact. We support sustainability by offering packaging designs that are reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
Here are the general criteria for packaging to be considered sustainable:
- Manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices;
- Physically designed to optimise natural resources: materials and energy;
- Beneficial, healthy, and safe for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle;
- Meets market criteria for performance and cost;
- Sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy;
- Maximises the use of recycled or renewable resources;
- Effectively recovered and utilised in biological and/or industrial cradle-to-cradle cycles.
What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable packaging?
Compostable packaging is designed to break down following a specific guideline of degradation. This type of packaging is made of eco-friendly materials. It helps in minimising waste by decomposing in less than six months. In contrast, biodegradable packaging can take varying amounts of time to completely break down. Additionally, they may not necessarily break down into organic matter.
Are recyclable pouches made of recycled materials?
No, recyclable pouches are made of recyclable materials. These are designed to be easily recycled once they are no longer needed. They are not necessarily made from recycled materials. Our bags and pouches are made of a single type of plastic polymer material. This makes it easier to recycle compared to those made of multilayer laminated plastic.
Can we use compostable packaging for all kinds of products?
The application of earth-friendly compostables as a sustainable packaging option remains limited. These materials degrade under specific conditions. This means compostables are more susceptible to microbial attacks over time. This quality can compromise the quality of certain products, especially sensitive food items.
Can we reuse or recycle biodegradable or compostable packaging materials?
What is the most sustainable packaging - biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable?
Current consumer and business practices make recyclable packaging the most sustainable choice.
When we use recyclable packaging, we can reuse and repurpose packaging materials. We don’t use as much raw material and reduce the amount of waste that can potentially end up in landfills.
The use of compostables, as a sustainable packaging solution, such as plant-based packaging, comes as a close second.
